I Get Mail, Child Exploitation Defender Edition

More than a year ago, I wrote an article about two cases involving librarians, library patron privacy, and the moral responsibility to protect children from pedophiles.  The piece was originally published at Red Alerts, and recently appeared on Afrocity’s blog.

A few ardent defenders of the right to browse child porn in public showed up to comment.  One by the name of “Chimp” feels that librarians have no business reporting suspected criminal activity when they witness it at work.  Chimp’s basic argument, punctuated by ad hominem attacks, was that it is “factually wrong that ordinary citizens are obllgated [sic] to report a crime of any sort.” Chimp is apparently unable to distinguish between legal obligations and the topic of the article, moral obligations.

Now an angry Chimp has contacted me via the contact form on this site, writing:

what happened to the child porn library story from Lindsay?

Was the fact that you were starting to get intelligent comments on this and other blogs cause for taking it down?

Since I have little interest in giving Chimp at chimp.island@yahoo.com my email address, I will respond in this space.

Chimp, in answer to your first question about what happened to the story, kindly put down the crack pipe and follow the links in the first paragraph.  You’ll see that the article still exists, as do your comments. It has never appeared on JennQPublic.com in any form.  If you’ve read and commented on the piece on two different sites, why do you need to see it here?

Regarding your contention that I removed the article from this and other blogs because I was “starting to get intelligent comments,” see the first answer. And just as an aside, I did receive many intelligent, thoughtful comments, but none of them were from you.  If you review the comment sections on this site, you will see that I am happy to engage in civil debate with people whose viewpoints differ from mine, but I don’t have the time or inclination to suffer through your logical fallacies when they add nothing to the discourse.

Oh, and one more thing: eat a dick.

    Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha! There needs to be an I.Q. test to comment on blogs. Unreal! He thought you “disappeared” the post so he emailed you because you’re probably the only person in the world that engages him in any way. Sad really.

    Hi Jenn,

    Just thought I’d check out your blog, since your responses on Rob’s have all been very thoughtful and intelligent.

    I read your library piece on Rob’s blog (he linked it in a discussion on my site.) I’ll have to go back and see what this “Chimp” clown had to say. But I did want to make the point that some states are starting to pass laws against not reporting child abuse. There have been a few cases I’ve read about where people were prosecuted for witnessing abuse and keeping silent about it (and rightfully so, IMO). I’ll have to find those articles… maybe then Mr. Chimpy will give up that ridiculous argument.

    Child Safety is EVERYONE’S Responsibility

    Unfortunately, two of the three news links in there are broken. I’ll see if they have the articles archived tomorrow.

    Papers don’t seem to keep their articles active online for very long, unfortunately. But this, at least, gives an idea of what I was referring to.

    I still haven’t had the chance to check out those posts, but I should be able to look into it tomorrow.

    Still working on getting links to those other two articles. I’ve also been unable to locate another article about a woman convicted of for failing reporting her housemate for abusing her (the housemate’s) autistic son. I’ll keep looking, but unfortunately can’t remember which state that happened in.

    I did get a chance to read “Chimp’s” comments. He’s a real piece of work, as is “Tallis” (are they the same person?) It’s just too bad that some people think it has to be a legal responsibility before they step up and do their moral duty.

    DodiaFae, thanks for digging up that link. Those people (a mother, a principal, and a school bus driver) were entrusted with the supervision of children and failed miserably. There is no doubt in my mind that those people should be prosecuted.

    Isn’t it sickening that people like Chimp & Tallis (separate IPs I think) are so hung up on legal mandates and so disinterested in moral responsibility? I’m glad there are people like you around who don’t need to be pressured by the legal system to report child exploitation.

    I found the link to the article about the autistic boy. He was five, beaten to death by his mother, and her housemate didn’t report it. He was apparently routinely beaten, as they found dozens of old injuries in various stages of healing.

    In my opinion, being required to serve only 85% of a 10 year sentence is far too lenient. Autistic or not, I’m sure that someone out there would have cared for that little boy with the love and care he needed and deserved.
