Pat Buchanan Unswayed by New York Money Men

I’ve written in the past about how the right needs to disown Pat Buchanan.  He and his ilk help to perpetuate the absurd notion that bigotry and prejudice are the domain of the political right (and that’s precisely why MSNBC keeps Buchanan around.)  He is an unacceptable drag on the Republican Party and conservatism.

Today Meryl Yourish asks:

If the Israel/Jewish Lobby is so powerful, howcome we can’t get Nazi-lover Pat Buchanan to STFU?

I believe in a big Republican tent, but there’s no tent big enough for the allies of Nazi sympathizers and Holocaust deniers.  When it comes to Buchanan, Meryl has the right approach: ridicule.

Please Pass the Anti-Semitic Salt

You know you’re an anti-Semite when you can’t stomach the thought of seasoning your food with kosher salt.

But fear not, Maryland businessman Joe Godlewski has launched a new venture to bring a more palatable Christian alternative to a store near you:

Retired barber Joe Godlewski says he was inspired by television chefs who repeatedly recommended kosher salt in recipes.

“I said, ‘What the heck’s the matter with Christian salt?'” Godlewski said, sipping a beer in the living room of his home in unincorporated Cresaptown, a western Maryland mountain community.

By next week, his trademarked Blessed Christians Salt will be available at http://www.memphi.net, the Web site of Memphis, Tenn.-based seasonings manufacturer Ingredients Corporation of America.

It’s sea salt that’s been blessed by an Episcopal priest, ICA President Damon S. Arney said Wednesday. He said the company also hopes to market the salt through Christian bookstores and as a fundraising tool for religious groups.

Lest you think this is simply clever Christian re-branding of a familiar household staple, Godlewski doesn’t plan to stop at kosher salt.  Next up, I kid you not, Christian branded rye bread, bagels and pickles.

Godlewski also told reporters,”There’s no anti-Semitism. I love Jesus Christ and he was a Jew.”

I’m not sure if that’s better or worse than attempting the “I have a Jewish friend” defense.

Things That Fail to Surprise Me

How often do you hear someone start a sentence with the words, “I can’t believe ….”  I can’t believe it’s raining.  I can’t believe Obama got elected.  I can’t believe another Chicago politician is corrupt.

But really, all these things are well within the realm of believability.  I prefer to think of them as remarkable – not shocking, not even really surprising, but definitely worth a remark or two.  In that spirit, here are some remarkable items I wish I could find surprising:

Arizona ranks among the worst states in the nation when it comes to emergency preparedness.  Since Arizona governor Janet Napolitano has done such a stand up job addressing her state’s disaster response capabilities, it’s only natural that she will oversee Homeland Security for the Obama administration. The increasing number of Orthodox Jews in the Riverdale section of the Bronx doesn’t sit well with at least one resident.  Michael O’Brien is calling for a boycott of local shops that have adapted their business practices to respond to shifting neighborhood demographics.  He is offended by the lack of Christmas decorations at the Jewish deli and outraged that the Dunkin Donuts across the street from an orthodox yeshiva doesn’t serve sausage and egg sandwiches.

Some liberal feminists consider the Twilight YA series to be dangerously misogynistic Mormon apologia.  I prefer not to link to them, but here’s a Google search to point you in the right direction if you’re so inclined.

Mounting evidence suggests that teenage girls seeking spiritual mentoring and camaraderie on pagan social networking sites are being lured into inappropriate relationships with adult men.

South Carolina GOP chairman Katon Dawson played the black friend card this week in a revoltingly calculated (and easily anticipated) attempt to assure the public that his 12 year membership in a segregated country club is irrelevant to his candidacy for national RNC chairman.

And finally, the Detroit bailout bill passed in the House of Representatives with a vote of 237-170 on Wednesday.  32 “Republicans” were among those who voted in favor of the “rescue package.”

Like I said, no surprises.
